Lung
cancer caused by smoking
"I was crushed when the doctor told me that I had lung cancer.
I cried every day but I have calmed down a lot.’ said Mr.
Bun Theun, a patient staying at Preah Bat Norodom Sihanouk hospital.
“I feel so bad. I cried and just fell unconscious when the
doctor told me that my husband has lung cancer caused by smoking.
Had I known that smoking will harm my husband’s health I would
have asked him long ago to quit. I want him to recover”, says
Mr. Bun Theun’s wife.
Hem Rady, a medical doctor at Preah Bat Norodom Sihanouk hospital
claims that Mr. Theun has lung cancer and he will not fully recover,
due to his serious condition.
For twenty-four years Mr. Bun Theun was a heavy smoker, finishing
one packet a day. He started when he was just 16 years old. Only
after developing severe breathing difficulties did he quit smoking,
having heard about the dangers of smoking on TV and radio. He tried
to quit many times before he finally quitted in 2000.
Mr. Theun’s wife said that she had simply not been aware of
the bad effects of smoking but now she knows very well. She stressed
that she dislikes smoking a lot now and she will walk away any time
someone smokes near her.
Mr. Bun Theun does not try to conceal his sadness and his hopelessness.
At the age of forty-three he has two sons and a daughter, saying
that now he is very concerned about the future of his children.
Dr. Rady stresses that “In Cambodia, cancer patients can
too often not be cured. Most people seek treatment at a very late
stage, when they are already in a very serious condition. In other
countries people see their doctor annually even when they do not
have problems. Thus any health problem is detected early enough
for a thorough treatment”. He continues that smoking causes
many different kinds of cancer of the lung, mouth, stomach, bladder
and others.
These people have really made a difference in their own and their
family's lives by quitting. Read their stories and how they were
able to stop smoking.
