Respondents by Location and Gender
Smoking and Health
The majority of people reported that they clearly know the bad effects of smoking on health (98.1%). Among 2,025 respondents that were chosen, 599 respondents (29.6%) were current smokers and 566 (94.5%) of these agreed that smoking is bad for their health. Only 33 people (5.5%) said that smoking does not have a bad effect on their health. Some of these people gave the answer that they currently smoke but that their health is fine. With these answers the researchers also asked in-depth questions to the respondents such as whether they often cough. The smokers replied that they cough but that coughing is a normal symptom whenever they get cold or get sick. Interestingly, some people said that they smoke home grown tobacco which does not have a bad impact on their health.
Table 3 shows the responses to the question of whether smoking is a bad for their health broken down by gender, smoking status, age group, education and location. Almost all (96.7%) of the older respondents agree that smoking is bad for health with an even greater percentage of younger adults (99.1%) in agreement.
