This year, as “Health Professional and Tobacco Control” is the main topic of World No Tobacco Day, ADRA Cambodia organized a parade on 31 May 2005 involving 300 students from the University of Health Sciences. These students walked along the street from the National University of Management to Preah Ket Mealea Hospital where they joined a Smoke Free Zone declaration ceremony.
His excellency H. E. Eng Pirun, as chairman of the ceremony, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health and the Vice president of the Joint-Ministries Committee for Tobacco Control said tobacco has affected health, economics and environment. It is also a factor in increase of poverty, and therefore we need to work with effective measures to save people’s lives. As tobacco industries owners are millionaires, it takes time to adopt a legal document to take action against tobacco. Cambodia has already signed the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) which is now in the process of ratification at the National Assembly.
